New in America

English as a Second Language

Unprecedented numbers of immigrants have settled in America within the last decade seeking hope and a better future. To thrive in their new communities, immigrants need encouragement, support, and meaningful connections with those around them. When immigrants find a welcoming community, they gain more than practical assistance—they discover a sense of belonging. As they learn everyday life skills, understand cultural traditions, and build relationships, they grow more confident and empowered in their new environment. At the heart of this journey is one essential skill: learning English. The ability to communicate in English opens doors to friendships, education and employment. Because of this important need, community organizations, churches, schools, and volunteers have unique opportunities to make a lasting difference in the lives of immigrants and their families.

This website offers practical resources for anyone involved in English language learning—whether you are part of an ESL program, tutor individuals, or work with small groups.

New in America integrates learning the English language with life skills in a new culture. Levels 1 and 2 have a large amount of vocabulary from a wide variety of daily topics. Vocabulary is effectively learned through comprehension and physical response using pictures. Video recordings of the vocabulary exercises are included for reinforcement outside of class. The vocabulary and grammar are used in dialogues where students practice while interacting with the teacher and their classmates. Level 3 focuses on employment, finances, social skills and health care. Students learn these important life skills while expanding vocabulary and grammar and practicing speaking on a paragraph level and giving opinions. The books from all three levels feature stories of people from different countries as they settle in America. The stories use the topic, vocabulary and grammar taught in the chapter. Video recordings of the stories are included for listening comprehension. In addition, each book includes a teacher’s guide. There is a book A and a book B on each level.
